Tips for Keeping Dust Out of Your Home

Tips for Keeping Dust Out of Your Home

Reducing the amount of dust in your home is probably a concern whether or not anyone living in it suffers from asthma or allergies, as after all, it’s unsightly as well as harmful for our health. With this in mind, here are a few simple tips for helping to keep dust out of your home:

Make your Home a ‘No Shoe’ Zone:

As much as 80% of dust in the average home comes through the door on the bottom of our shoes, so removing them either outside the door, or directly inside it, is one step towards achieving a dust-free environment.

Stop Dirt from Entering:

Mats have long been known to help stop dirt, dust and other grime particles from spreading throughout a home, and positioning them outside (and inside) every entrance, is one simple way of reducing dirt even if you can’t persuade a visitor or family member to remove their shoes. Just remember to shake them outside regularly or vacuum them to prevent too much dirt from accumulating.

Change your Filters Often:

The more often you can change your HVAC filters, the better, and while most manufacturers say this should be done every 3 months, if you use less expensive filters and change them more often, you will certainly help to reduce dust in your home.

Clean your Air Ducts:

While this doesn’t have to be done every week, or even every month, try to pull the vent covers off your floor registers at least twice a year to keep them clean and prevent dust from floating around your home.

Try to Limit the Dust Mite Population in Your Bed:

While most of us don’t like to think about microscopic creepy crawlies living in our bed, the reality is that they’re almost certainly there. However, regular mattress vacuuming and frequent bedding laundering can significantly reduce and control their population.

Vacuum Frequently:

Purchase a cordless vacuum cleaner and you’ll find it so much easier to grab it and run it around a different room each day. For high traffic areas of your home, try to vacuum more often and you’ll limit the amount of dust and other debris that’s able to build up.

Ditch the Feather Duster – For Good!

These cleaning tools are from a bygone era and have long been known to spread more dust than they collect. If you can’t use a vacuum to clean your floors, carpets and other surfaces, then at least use a microfiber cloth that will pick up the dust instead if transferring it from one place to another.

Dryer Sheets Make a Great Cleaning Tool:

If you haven’t already discovered that dryer sheets are great for cleaning up dust, then where have you been?! You might need to wipe surfaces with a damp cloth first, but then use a dryer sheet and run it over the same surface; the anti-static coating will keep them free of dust for longer.

If tips for keeping your home free of dust aren’t really your thing, why not hire a professional cleaning company to help you eliminate dust instead?
