What is the Gaslamp District?
In 1850, a San Franciscan by the name of William Heath Davis began development of a small parcel of land at what is now the foot of Market Street. This was in an effort to establish a town on the waterfront as a new port of trade, originally known as “New Town”
As San Diego grew and expanded due to maritime trade, the area now known as the Gaslamp District would come to be known as the “Stingaree” – a notorious red light district teeming with sailors, bars and brothels. Sailors joked that it was far easier to get “stung” in this shady part of town than it was in the bay with all its stingrays.
The neighborhood, having fallen into disrepair over the passing decades, remained one of ill repute all the way up to the mid 1970’s until the legendary political pioneer Tom Hom organized concerned local business owners and investors to initiate a change for the better. The creation of the modern Gaslamp quarter arose from a community decision to create a Victorian themed 16 ½ block area spanning from the bay to Broadway between 4th and 6th Avenues.
Located smack in the center of downtown San Diego, the Gaslamp Quarter is the the home some fantastic restaurants, bars and boutiques. It is comprised of 16 city blocks, which are home to more than 80 shops and outlets offering accessories, apparel, art, books, music, and more.
